Let’s talk about flowers. Why you need them, where you can find them and how to breed them.
Uses-
Flowers can be used for decoration on your island by planting them directly onto grass blocks or planting them in pots that are crafted using the Pottery Bench that you can buy from the Florist in the Hub. I personally love the ways I can decorate my island with the variety of colors and flowers available since the update!
You can create different colored blocks using non-fertile flowers using the Coloring Station. Having a variety of different colored blocks is essential if you like to get creative on your island.
A variety of flowers are also needed to create furniture items. Along with furniture, you can craft colored carpets and colored glass. I sell a lot of furniture on my island so I am in constant need of non-fertile flowers.
You can also sell flowers in your vending machines. This is a great way to gain more coins. Non-fertile blue, red and yellow flowers can sell for a lot of coin and some of the more rare FERTILE flowers can sell for up to millions of coins. Who couldn’t use more coins????
Where to find them-
There are four types of flowers that will automatically spawn on the grassy areas of your island. They are lilies, daisies, hyacinth, and hibiscus. The flowers that spawn on your island will always be FERTILE, which means you can breed them to create more flowers. Be sure to collect the fertile flowers often so that more flowers will spawn. You can collect any flower that spawns on your island by hovering over it with your cursor and pressing the “F” button.
In order from most common to rare, here is what fertile flowers you can expect to see spawn on your island. Red, Yellow and Blue Lillies, Red and Yellow Daisies, Yellow, Red and Blue Hyacinth, and Light Green and Blue Hibiscus. With this base collection of flowers you can breed them to create more colors of the specific type of flower. Here is what you can breed using only the flowers that automatically spawn on your island..
Red Lily + Red Lily = Black Lily
Blue Lily + Blue Lily = Cyan Lily
Yellow Lily + Yellow Lily = TBD
Yellow Daisy + Yellow Daisy = White Daisy
Red Daisy + Red Daisy = Cyan Daisy
Blue Hyacinth + Blue Hyacinth = Cyan Hyacinth
Red Hyacinth + Red Hyacinth = Light Green Hyacinth
Yellow Hyacinth + Yellow Hyacinth = Light Green, Orange, or Red Hyacinth
Light Green Hibiscus + Light Green Hibiscus = Black, Blue or Pink Hibiscus
Blue Hibiscus + Blue Hibiscus = Pink Hibiscus or Purple Hibiscus
I like to call these certain colors “carriers”, meaning that the flower will produce the results I mentioned alone, combined with the same color and type of flower or combined with a flower of different color or type. For example, if you breed a Red Lily and a Blue Hyacinth you will eventually get a Black Lily OR a Cyan Hyacinth since the flowers you are breeding produce only those flowers. Flower species will never cross-breed. Your results, if you mix breed types, are because of the carrier flowers.
In addition to the flowers that spawn on your island, you can purchase Fertile Daffodils from the Florist located in the Hub. You will need to complete challenges to get petals and for the cost of 35 petals each, you can buy Fertile Red Daffodils or Fertile Yellow Daffodils.
Red Daffodils will create orange, yellow and light green daffodils.
Yellow Daffodils will create Light Green Daffodils.
Breeding-
Since you now know what purpose the flowers serve and what colors you can start out with, let’s talk about breeding. I suggest breeding flowers in larger groups for faster results. Sure you can water ONE flower and eventually get a colored flower instead of a mundane but this will take much longer than breeding multiple flowers at one time. Of course if you are just starting out you won’t have a lot of flowers. My suggestion is to breed them all together in a specific area you create for breeding. It has been said that if you can breed flowers in an area with bees, you will have better results. I have been breeding in a covered area that I made specifically for breeding under my island. It has been working fine for me, or so I thought, until I moved some flowers I couldn’t get to breed into an area with bees. On the first watering, I got flowers that I had trouble getting in my breeding area.
Try different things to see what works best for you! There are different layouts that you can try. I personally like to line up the flowers directly next to each other in a row of no more than 6, with a block space row that separates another row of flowers and repeat. Think of a rectangle with a row of flowers lining the top, a space, another row, a space and another row. There is also the alternating flower layout where you place a flower then have a block space and then place down the next flower. Continue this for a few rows to create a zigzag pattern. This method takes more time to harvest since you can’t just pick up the spawned flowers in a row like the first layout.
Once you have your fertile flowers placed in the area that you want, you will need to water them. Unlike the crops, you can not set up an automatic watering system. You will need to use the wooden watering can to water each flower. You create the watering can in your workbench. Hold your watering can and click on the flower you wish to water. You can tell if the flower has been watered by the little blue droplets falling from the flowers petals. It will take 10 minutes for the new flowers to spawn.
Three types of flowers can spawn when you water. –
Mundane flowers– This will be the most common flower to spawn and is dark grey. There currently isn’t any use for mundane flowers other than decoration.
Regular flowers– These are the flowers you can use in crafting recipes and for decoration.
Fertile flowers- These flowers can be used to breed more flowers. The spawning of fertile flowers takes more time, so keep watering and harvesting your flowers! You can tell if a flower is fertile by hovering your cursor over the flower and if it is fertile, it will say FERTILE with whatever type of flower it is. For example, FERTILE RED LILY
If a colored flower doesn’t appear right away, that’s okay just keep trying. Patience and consistency is key! So try a layout about ten or so times before you switch it up.
I can’t leave the original daffodil and crocus off the list. These flowers are found on Wizard Island. They are purely for decoration as you can not breed them. The cool thing about these flowers are they can be placed on any block such as brick or stone, whereas the other flowers can only be placed on grass blocks.
